It’s been exactly one year since Carrie Underwood, the beloved queen of country music, took a terrifying tumble that left her with 40 stitches on her face and a broken wrist. And now, she’s ready to talk about how that accident not only affected her physically but also compromised her ability to do what she does best—sing. In a candid conversation, Carrie dives deep into the mental and physical battles she faced during her recovery process.
Recovering From the Fall While Recording a New Album
Carrie, now 35, opened up in a heartfelt interview with Vulture about the mental and physical toll her accident took on her. At the time of the incident, she was deep into recording her latest album, Cry Pretty. “I felt like the differences were all in my head, more than anyone else who might listen to my music,” Carrie explained. “I wanted to get back into the studio sooner than I did, but it just wasn’t possible. I had stitches inside and outside my mouth, and it was physically impossible to sing the way I needed to.”

Returning to the Studio: A Mental and Physical Challenge
When Carrie finally stepped back into the studio, she found herself playing a mind game with her own abilities. “I was constantly questioning myself: ‘Do I sound the same? Is my diction the same? Does my mouth move the same way it used to?’” she revealed. She added, “Every time I sang, I’d glance over at David [Garcia] and ask, ‘Did all of that come out clearly?’ My m’s, b’s, and p’s were the tricky ones. But David reassured me, saying, ‘It sounds great.’ That was such a relief to hear from my producer.”

Learning to Accept Change
Despite the challenges, Carrie, who is now expecting her second child with husband Mike Fisher, is learning to accept the changes that come with age. “As we grow older, things naturally change—our muscles evolve. I’ve come to expect that I won’t always sound like I did when I was 22 and fresh off American Idol. Hopefully, I continue to improve,” she said with optimism. Fans, on the other hand, believe she sounds better than ever!

Back in November 2017, Carrie first shared the news of her accident with her concerned fans. Later, she mentioned that she might look a bit different after the fall, though she was “doing great” post-wrist surgery. “I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m doing great. I had surgery on my wrist yesterday, and everything went well—even though I’ll be setting off airport metal detectors from now on,” she joked in a tweet last year. “I’m so thankful for the doctors, nurses, family, and friends who’ve been taking such great care of me.” We’re all incredibly grateful that she’s doing better today!
