Idina Menzel's Son Walker Isn't Impressed By Mom's Fame—Here's Why

Let’s talk about Idina Menzel for a moment. You know her, right? The powerhouse behind Elsa in Frozen, the iconic role of Elphaba in Wicked, and a voice that could probably shatter glass if she sang loud enough. But despite her global fame, it turns out her nine-year-old son, Walker Diggs, isn’t exactly blown away by her career. In a candid interview with Us Weekly, Idina opened up about what life is really like at home with her little one.

Walker’s Take on Mom’s Career: Basketball Over Broadway

When you think about Idina Menzel, you might picture red carpets, sold-out concerts, and fans screaming her name. But inside her home, it’s a totally different story. According to Idina, her son Walker couldn’t care less about her singing or acting gigs. “He doesn’t care. All he wants to do is play basketball,” she revealed. And if you think he’s psyched about her reuniting with Kristin Chenoweth to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Wicked, think again. “He could care less,” Idina admitted. It’s safe to say Walker’s priorities are firmly planted on the court rather than the stage.

    Frozen? More Like Frozen Out

Now, here’s the kicker: Walker isn’t exactly a fan of Frozen, the movie that made his mom a household name. “He’s seen it maybe twice. He hates it,” Idina confessed. Her reasoning? It’s “princessy,” and let’s be honest, who wants to watch their mom belt out songs when they could be shooting hoops instead? Plus, every time Idina sings, it means she has to work, and that takes her away from Walker. “It’s mommy singing, so it means that she has to work and go sing the stupid song, and it takes me away from him,” she explained. Can you blame the kid for wanting his mom all to himself?

The One Thing Walker Loves About Mom’s Job

There is, however, one tiny perk of having a mom who voices Elsa: bragging rights. “That’s his game,” Idina said. Walker loves telling all the girls at his school that his mom is Elsa, which must make him the coolest kid in class. But for now, at least, Walker’s still young enough to not fully grasp just how incredible his mom’s career is. “He’s going to think I’m the coolest mom,” Idina shared, hinting that her little boy will grow to appreciate her more as he gets older. Aww, how sweet is that?

Of course, Idina’s life hasn’t just been about work and raising Walker. After her 11-year marriage to actor Taye Diggs ended in 2014, she found love again with Aaron Lohr. The two tied the knot in 2017 after co-starring in the 2005 film Rent. Idina shared the happy news on Twitter, saying, “Wanted to let you know… Married the love of my life #AaronLohr this weekend [at] our home. [My] dad [and my] son walked me down [the] aisle.” Sounds like a truly magical moment, doesn’t it?
