Matthew McConaughey Almost Played Jack Dawson In Titanic: The Story Behind The Casting

Let me tell you a little story that’ll blow your mind. Picture this: Matthew McConaughey stepping into the iconic role of Jack Dawson in the blockbuster hit Titanic. Believe it or not, that almost happened! But guess what? After the charismatic actor behind How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days auditioned for the role, the part ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio. How’s that for a twist?

Matthew McConaughey’s Titanic Audition

Back in 2015, during an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast, Matthew McConaughey, then 49, opened up about his Titanic audition. "I went and auditioned. I wanted that," he confessed. "I auditioned with Kate Winslet, had a good audition, walked away from there pretty confident that I had it. I didn’t get it. I never got offered that." Can you imagine the confidence he must have had walking out of that audition? He truly believed the role was his.

What Happened After the Audition?

Matthew was so sure of his performance that he still wonders if his agent never followed up with the offer. "And as I’ve said before not even half-jokingly if it’s true if that was an offer and it didn’t come to me, I’ve got to go back and go, ‘I’ve got to meet in an alley with that agent.’" Talk about taking matters into your own hands!

As if Matthew’s revelation wasn’t enough to leave you stunned, Kate Winslet, 43, also confirmed the story on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December. "I auditioned with Matthew, isn’t that weird?" Kate admitted. "Never said that in public before. I auditioned with Matthew, which was completely fantastic. It just wouldn’t have been the whole 'Jack and Rose, Kate and Leo' thing." You can almost hear the awe in her voice as she shares this little-known fact with the world.

Matthew and Leo: A Friendly Rivalry

It seems like Matthew holds no grudges against Leo, and vice versa. In fact, throughout their careers, they’ve both been in situations where one beat the other out for acting projects. Their paths crossed again in 2013 when they worked together on The Wolf of Wall Street. This collaboration turned them into good friends.

Fast forward to 2014, Matthew took home the Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. Even though Leo was nominated in the same category, he warmly congratulated Matthew with a hug and a friendly kiss on the cheek during the award show. I’m sure Matthew would’ve done the same if the roles were reversed.
