There’s nothing quite like learning a valuable life lesson from your dad, and Prince William and Prince Harry are no exception. In the upcoming documentary, Prince, Son And Heir: Charles At 70, Prince William opens up about a unique way his father, Prince Charles, instilled a deep sense of environmental responsibility in him and his younger brother.
Speaking in the documentary, which is set to air on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 9 p.m. in the UK, William, now 36, recalls a family tradition that might surprise some. “He took us litter picking when we were younger, on holiday,” William shares, according to The Telegraph. “We were in Norfolk on school holidays, and we went out litter picking with him.”

William went on to explain the hands-on approach his father took in teaching them about the environment. “Both of us thought, ‘This is perfectly normal, everyone must do it,’” he said. “We’re there with our, basically, spikes, stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags. It was a real eye-opener for us.”

Harry’s Perspective: Continuing the Legacy
Prince Harry, now 34, echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the profound impact their father and late mother, Princess Diana, had on shaping their worldview. “He’s done an amazing job,” Harry said, reflecting on Charles’s influence. “Without telling us what we should be doing or the direction we should go in, he’s just let us learn from the nature of the job, learn from him, learn from mummy.”
Harry admitted that his early efforts to clean up litter weren’t always met with enthusiasm from his peers. “I used to get taken the mickey out of at school for picking up rubbish,” he confessed. “But I didn’t go out consciously looking for it. It was more like when you go for walks anywhere and you see something, and it stands out, so you pick it up. It’s just become second nature.”

Protecting Princess Diana’s Legacy
Meghan Markle’s husband has always been vocal about his mission to honor his mother’s memory. This is just one of the many ways Harry continues to protect Diana’s legacy. “All I want to do is try and fill the holes my mother has left,” Harry once expressed in the documentary Diana, 7 Days. “And between myself and William, and everybody else that’s in those privileged positions, to try and make a difference. And that’s what it’s about for us, trying to make a difference.”
