A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years On Broadway

Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without a witch or two, right? But let’s be honest, witches are so much cooler when they’re wicked. NBC clearly gets this, and as part of the 15th anniversary celebration of the Broadway phenomenon Wicked, they’re throwing a party with A Very Wicked Halloween concert special on Monday, October 29. So grab your pointy hats, and let’s dive in!

Why NBC Is Bringing the Magic Back

Doug Vaughan, Executive Vice President of Special Programs and Late Night at NBC Entertainment, couldn’t be more thrilled about this collaboration. “Wicked is a blockbuster musical that’s been selling out night after night for 15 years on Broadway,” he says. “We’re so excited to partner with the brilliant Emmy and Tony-winning producer Marc Platt and the entire Wicked team to celebrate the incredible success of this show.” Vaughan also hints that the concert special will feature the original dream team, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, reuniting for the occasion. And here’s the kicker—guest stars will join them on stage, possibly in costume, to make this a truly unforgettable Halloween celebration.

A Different Take on an Old Story

Wicked isn’t just another retelling of the Wizard of Oz tale; it’s a fresh perspective that flips the script on what we thought we knew. The story takes us back long before Dorothy Gale ever landed in Oz, introducing us to a young woman with emerald-green skin. She’s smart, fiery, misunderstood, and brimming with extraordinary talent. Her chance meeting with a bubbly blonde who’s all about popularity at first sparks rivalry, but it evolves into an unlikely friendship. However, as the world around them decides who’s “good” and who’s “wicked,” their bond is tested in ways neither of them could have imagined.

The novel invites us to rethink everything we believe about good and evil. It challenges us to question what we’ve been told is truth and goodness, because sometimes, those things might just be a lie.”
