Chevy Chase Speaks Out: His Unfiltered Thoughts On SNL Today

Alright, buckle up, because Chevy Chase has decided to drop some truth bombs about the state of Saturday Night Live. Yeah, you heard me right. The legendary comedian, who helped launch SNL back in the day, isn’t holding back when it comes to sharing his thoughts on what the show has become. Chevy was one of the original cast members, introducing nearly every episode during that groundbreaking first season in 1975. But now, as SNL gears up for its 44th season, Chevy’s not exactly pleased with the direction things have taken.

Let’s just say, he’s not shy about expressing his disappointment. In a recent sit-down with The Washington Post, Chevy let it all out. “I’m amazed that Lorne [Michaels, the creator and producer] has sunk so low. I had to watch a bit of it, and I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. And folks, Chevy didn’t stop there. He went on to say, “That means a whole generation of knuckleheads is laughing at the worst humor in the world. It’s just mind-blowing.” Oof, that’s a punch right in the gut for SNL fans. Awkward, right?

“You know what I mean? How can you possibly give that generation worse garbage than they already have in their lives? It drives me absolutely crazy,” Chevy, now 74, added. He’s clearly passionate about this, and it’s clear he’s not pulling any punches. But let’s rewind for a moment and remember the good old days. Chevy was there from the very beginning in 1975 as the original anchor, introducing each episode with the iconic line, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” He was also the star of Weekend Update, but he left midway through the second season in 1976. That wasn’t the last we saw of him, though. He hosted the show a few times in 1997, returned for the 25th anniversary special in 1999, and even graced the stage for the 40th anniversary special in 2015. But after this explosive interview, we’re guessing he might not be getting an invite back anytime soon.

Not Everyone Gets a Pass: Chevy’s Thoughts on Modern Cast Members

Now, Chevy didn’t just stop at criticizing the show as a whole. Oh no, he also took the opportunity to dish out some choice words about some of the more recent cast members. Take Will Ferrell, for example. Chevy wasn’t exactly impressed with his George W. Bush impression. “Just not funny,” he said bluntly. And then there’s the fact that Will’s raking in $25 million per movie. Oof, that’s gotta sting.
