Gal Gadot's Exciting New Projects Beyond Wonder Woman

Listen, if there was ever a concern that Gal Gadot might get pigeonholed as the Amazon Princess Wonder Woman, she’s making sure that doesn’t happen. The actress, who's currently shooting Wonder Woman 1984, is proving she's got range. Not only is she set to star in a Showtime TV series about the legendary actress Hedy Lamarr, but she's also signed on for a remake of the classic Agatha Christie murder mystery, Death on the Nile. It's like she's saying, "Yes, I can kick ass as Wonder Woman, but I've got a whole lot more to offer."

Published way back in 1937, Death on the Nile is one of Christie's most famous novels. The story revolves around the brilliant detective Hercule Poirot, played by Kenneth Branagh, who also directs. In this tale, Poirot is on a luxurious Nile River cruise when a murder occurs. Complicating matters, several suspects end up dead too. Gal, who’s just 33, will step into the role of Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, a wealthy heiress. She’s the first cast member to be announced, and it’s a big deal. This role shows she’s ready to take on complex characters beyond her iconic role as Wonder Woman.

When Kenneth Branagh spoke with Cinemablend during the release of Murder on the Orient Express, he shared his excitement about revisiting Poirot in Death on the Nile. At 57, Branagh’s enthusiasm is palpable: “I’d love to play Poirot again. This book is a deep dive into obsessive love, and it’s intense. With our Poirot, there’s this mysterious connection to a character named Katherine. Who is she? What’s their story? And how does Poirot feel about romance? It’s a world where love never goes unpunished, and there’s so much potential here if we get the chance.” Looks like they’re getting that chance.

Gal Gadot as Hedy Lamarr: A Different Kind of Wonder Woman

But wait, there's more! If everything falls into place, Gal Gadot is also set to portray another kind of wonder woman—actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr—in a new limited series for Showtime. The project is being developed by Sarah Treem, the creative mind behind The Affair. This series is shaping up to be something special, much like other limited series we’ve seen lately, such as Big Little Lies or Sharp Objects.

  • Hedy Lamarr was born in Austria on November 9, 1914, and her acting career, largely through MGM, spanned from the late 1930s to the 1950s. She starred in iconic films like Algiers, Boom Town, I Take This Woman, Comrade X, Come Live With Me, H.M. Pulham, Esq., and Samson and Delilah, which became her most popular film. But Hedy wasn’t just about acting; she was also an inventor. During World War II, she collaborated with composer George Anthell to create a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes. This innovation helped prevent the Axis powers from jamming the signals. Interestingly, their invention became the foundation for modern Bluetooth technology. In 2014, both were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Hedy’s acting career declined in the late 1950s, and she passed away on January 19, 2000.

This limited series will delve into Hedy’s life, much like other acclaimed limited series we’ve seen. It’s a chance to explore the life of a woman who was not only a screen icon but also a trailblazer in the world of technology.
