Hey there, movie lovers! Let's talk about Guillermo del Toro’s version of Pinocchio. Now, this isn’t just any adaptation of the classic tale—it’s Guillermo’s take, and if his last film, the utterly unique love story The Shape of Water, which swept the Oscars with four wins including Best Director and Best Picture, is any indication, we're in for something truly special. So, is the world ready for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio? Absolutely, and here’s why.
Why Guillermo's Pinocchio is Going to Be a Game-Changer
Pinocchio is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix, and it’s not just any old animated film. Guillermo’s version will use stop-motion animation, much like Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas or The Corpse Bride. This means each frame is painstakingly crafted, giving the film a tactile, almost magical quality. Guillermo’s Pinocchio promises to be a departure from the Disney version we all know and love, taking us on a journey that’s darker, richer, and more emotionally complex.
Guillermo's Deep Connection to Pinocchio
For Guillermo, this project is deeply personal. In his own words, “No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation, and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio.” He goes on to describe the story as one about “an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend.” It’s a journey that leads Pinocchio to a profound understanding of both his father and the real world. Guillermo has long dreamed of making this movie, and after the success of Trollhunters, he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to bring his vision to life with Netflix.

A Journey of Love, Loss, and Transformation

Guillermo’s passion for this project has been evident for over a decade. As far back as 2008, he’s been talking about his dream of creating a stop-motion animated Pinocchio. At the Venice Film Festival last year, during a press conference for The Shape of Water, Guillermo revealed, “I’ve been looking for financing for almost ten years. We have the puppets, we have the design. I always or almost always complicate my life. None of the movies I want to do are easy. And they don’t belong to anything anyone wanted to do at that time. No one wanted to do superheroes when I did Hellboy. No one wanted to do monsters when I did Pacific Rim. When I announced Pinocchio, I got many calls: ‘Yeah but it’s set during the rise of Mussolini; it’s an anti-fascist Pinocchio.’ [mimes they all hung up] If you have $35 million and if you want to make a Mexican happy, here I am.”
Thankfully, Netflix has both the $35 million and the desire to make Guillermo’s dream a reality.
An Anti-Fascist Pinocchio: A Tale for Our Times
An anti-fascist Pinocchio? It’s a bold move, and one that promises to resonate with audiences today. Guillermo’s Pinocchio will be a journey of love, loss, and transformation, set against the backdrop of historical events. It’s not just a story for children—it’s a powerful narrative that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human.
We can’t wait to see what Guillermo brings to the screen. It’s going to be a masterpiece, no doubt about it.
