Michael Gross Reflects On 'Family Ties,' Life, Love, And Legacy

For seven unforgettable years, Michael Gross lit up our screens as Steven Keaton in Family Ties, becoming one of television's most beloved dads. But did you know he’s remained close to his on-screen wife and everyone’s favorite TV mom, Meredith Baxter? Let me tell you, their friendship is as real as it gets. Michael recently opened up to Closer Weekly about their enduring bond, his latest projects, and life beyond the small screen. Here’s the scoop.

Let me paint you a picture. Michael and Meredith first crossed paths in their mid-30s, and now, decades later, they’re both 71 years young. “We’ve known each other for half our lives,” Michael marveled in an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. “We’ve maintained a strong relationship over the years, and we’ve never lost touch.” The duo’s chemistry is still on full display as they star together in A.R. Gurney’s play Love Letters, currently touring across the country. If you haven’t seen it yet, trust me, you’re missing out.

And if you’re a holiday movie fan, Michael is back on your screens this season in the Lifetime film Christmas Pen Pals. He plays a loving father navigating life’s ups and downs. Still Spreading Holiday Cheer: Michael Gross Joins Lifetime’s Christmas Pen Pals

When the script for Christmas Pen Pals landed on his desk, Michael had mixed feelings. “Does the world really need another Christmas movie?” he wondered aloud. But let me tell you, the answer is a resounding yes. While Michael might not typically jump at the chance to play another father figure after seven years as Steven Keaton, he was drawn to this character’s journey. “This is a man struggling to find his place in the world,” Michael explained. “It’s a story about connection and redemption, and I couldn’t pass that up.”

Backstage Banter: Reuniting with Meredith Baxter in Love Letters

Michael and Meredith’s chemistry is as vibrant as ever in Love Letters. “It’s like we’re two old pros who know each other inside and out,” Michael laughed. “We can finish each other’s sentences without even trying. There’s a level of comfort and understanding that only comes with time.”

What’s the Secret to On-Screen Chemistry?

Chemistry isn’t just about magic—it’s about work. “Sometimes, it feels like lightning in a bottle,” Michael admitted. “But more often than not, it’s about truly listening to the person across from you, sharing thoughts, and building trust. Meredith and I have had decades to develop that connection, and it shows.”

Even though Michael J. Fox lives on the opposite coast, Michael makes it a point to meet up whenever he’s in New York. “We grab breakfast or lunch, catch up, and reminisce,” he said. As for the show’s younger stars, Justine Bateman and Tina Yothers, they’re now busy raising their own families. “We’re all still friends, but life gets in the way sometimes,” Michael shared. “They’re incredible moms, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

While fans may dream of a Family Ties reboot, Michael isn’t holding his breath. “I wrote Michael J. Fox a letter on his 50th birthday telling him how amazed I was that he was now 15 years older than I was when I played his dad,” he joked. “We’ve all moved on, and unfortunately, our creator, Gary David Goldberg, passed away five years ago. To be honest, I have recurring nightmares about trying to revive the show. It’s like attempting to relive your childhood—it just doesn’t feel right.”
