It's tough to hear, but Sandra Bullock, the Hollywood icon with over three decades of showbiz success, has stepped back from the spotlight to care for her ailing father, John W. Bullock. Unfortunately, John passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 18 after battling illness for a while, as revealed by Sandra's boyfriend, Bryan Randall.
Bryan took to Instagram on Thursday, Sept. 20 to share a poignant black and white photo of John. The heartfelt caption read, "On September 18th at 10:04 p.m. CST, surrounded by family and friends, John W. Bullock left the building. As a father, grandfather, and WWII veteran, we thank you for your service. PS: Hey God, we’re sending you a live one!” It was a touching tribute to a man who meant the world to so many.
John Bullock: A Life Well-Lived
Reports from Star magazine indicate that John had been bedridden for several months at his home in Birmingham, AL. A close source shared that Sandra, known affectionately as "Sandy" to her family, holds her father in the highest regard and wanted to be there for him in his final years. It's clear that their bond is unbreakable, and Sandra was determined to make every moment count.

Putting Family First
After Sandra’s mom, Helga Meyer, passed away from colon cancer 18 years ago, Sandra knew the value of being present for her father. An insider revealed, "She’s put a lot of projects to the side so that they can spend precious time together, and if that means losing out on some movie roles, then I’m sure her attitude is, so be it.” It's evident that Sandra prioritizes her family above all else, even when it means taking a step back from her successful career.
“I’m told she’s planning to make this her full-time focus, which will mean ducking out of sight for a while to effectively become his nurse. Her dad comes before anything else,” the source told Star before John's passing.
Sandra's Career Pause
With her work schedule slowing down, Sandra could be there for her father's services. After the release of "Ocean’s 8," Sandra allegedly only has one more movie to promote in the coming months, a thriller titled Bird Box, which she finished filming last winter. This break in her career allowed her to focus on what truly matters—her family.
In a previous interview with Star, John's close friend Jimmy Koikos, 79, expressed concerns about John reaching 100 years old. He mentioned, "He might have a few years left, but he has around-the-clock care now." Unfortunately, his concerns were valid.

Remembering a Gentleman
When Jimmy visited John’s home weeks before his passing, he revealed that Sandra’s father was using an oxygen tank and mostly sitting in front of the TV. “He’s lived a good life and has great family and friends around him,” Jimmy shared.
“[Sandra] comes [to Birmingham] in a huge bus and is very private. She doesn’t want anyone to know she’s in town. She came up to me a while ago, looking like a million dollars and said, ‘Jimmy, I want to say thank you for being so nice to my dad.’ I said, ‘Sandra, your dad is one of the kindest, most thoughtful gentlemen I have ever met.’ John is incredibly proud of her,” Jimmy sweetly shared with the magazine.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Sandra and her family during this incredibly difficult time.
