Debra Messing Celebrates Turning 50 With Work, Family, And A Whole Lot Of Laughter

Let me tell you a story about Debra Messing—yes, that Debra Messing—and how she turned her 50th birthday into something truly special. Picture this: it’s August 15, and instead of kicking back with a slice of cake, Debra was hard at work filming the reboot of Will & Grace. But don’t get me wrong, she wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I was filming on my birthday, and it was great to be working!” she told Closer Weekly during an exclusive interview at Project Angel Food’s Angel Awards in Los Angeles. And hey, if you’re Debra Messing, who needs a day off when you’ve got a legendary sitcom waiting for you?

A Special Surprise from Eric McCormack

Now here’s where things get even better. Debra’s co-star, Eric McCormack, decided to make the day extra memorable. Before they started shooting, Eric led the entire studio audience in singing "Happy Birthday" to Debra. Can you imagine? The whole room erupting in song for one of TV’s most beloved actresses? “That was pretty special,” Debra gushed, and honestly, who could blame her? But as it turns out, the day wasn’t over yet. Debra had one more surprise waiting for her.

“Then my son came into town to help me celebrate,” Debra said, referring to her 14-year-old son, Roman. Now that’s what I call a perfect ending to a milestone birthday. Debra also took a moment to reflect on what turning 50 means to her. “It feels kind of wonderful—I feel like I’m very at peace with where I am in my life,” she shared. “I’m really in touch with what I’m grateful for, and I know who I am. I feel secure about saying no when I need to. Honestly, it’s a really good place to be.” Can we just take a second to appreciate that level of self-awareness? Debra’s wisdom is as sharp as her comedic timing.

Back to Work: The Magic of ‘Will & Grace’

This summer, Debra’s been busy shooting the reboot of Will & Grace, which has already been renewed for a second season. When asked about returning to the set, she opened up to ABC News Radio about how emotional it was. “The first time we walked out, and the audience went wild, hearing our music... every single one of us started to cry,” she recalled. “We just hope that we can make everybody laugh as hard as we did before, or maybe even harder.” If you’ve seen the show, you know they’re definitely delivering on that promise.

Debra attributes the reboot’s success to its timeless humor and relatability. “I think people love the show because they know they’re going to laugh out loud at some point in this 22-minute story,” she explained. “That’s the kind of comedy that lives within the universe of Will & Grace. It’s big, it’s broad, it’s silly, and sometimes it’s even a little vaudevillian. But more than anything, I don’t think you can underestimate the healing power of laughter.” And honestly, who would argue with that?
