Let me tell you, Gabrielle Union is nothing short of inspiring. The actress has been incredibly open about her fertility struggles, sharing her journey in her 2017 book, We’re Going to Need More Wine. In the book, she revealed that she’s experienced eight or nine miscarriages. Recently, Gabrielle opened up even further, sharing new details about her difficulties in conceiving a child.
At 45, Gabrielle disclosed during a conference in NYC that she’s been diagnosed with adenomyosis, a painful condition similar to endometriosis that affects the uterus. This revelation adds a new layer to her ongoing battle with fertility and sheds light on the challenges she’s faced over the years.

“As I neared the end of my fertility journey, I finally started getting some answers,” Gabrielle explained, as reported by Essence. “For years, people told me, ‘You’re a career-driven woman, you prioritized your career, you waited too long, and now you’re just too old to have kids. That’s on you for wanting a career.’ But the truth is, I actually have adenomyosis.”
What Gabrielle didn’t realize at the time is that she’s been dealing with this condition since her early twenties. “The twist is, I had it in my early twenties,” she added. “Instead of diagnosing me, doctors dismissed my symptoms, telling me things like, ‘Oh, you have periods that last 9 or 10 days, and you’re bleeding through overnight pads… maybe there’s something more going on.’ Every doctor I saw just wanted to put me on birth control.”

In her book, Gabrielle talks candidly about the emotional and physical toll these experiences took on her. “I’ve had eight or nine miscarriages,” she wrote. “For three years, my body was constantly in this cycle of trying to conceive — either about to start an IVF cycle, in the middle of one, or coming out of one. It was relentless.”
Gabrielle’s Journey with Dwyane Wade

Gabrielle, who tied the knot with her husband, Dwyane Wade, in 2014, spoke candidly during a 2015 interview with Today about their decision to turn to IVF to grow their family. “Fertility is a challenge, period. And having a career is not the price you pay for facing any hardships,” she said. “I think TV shows and films often portray the single-minded, career-driven woman as someone who has her career to blame for all her problems in life. But that’s simply not true. Life gets better with age, and having a career is an incredible thing if you choose to pursue one. All hope is not lost.”
We can’t help but root for Gabrielle and Dwyane as they continue their journey together. Their openness and honesty about their struggles remind us that no matter the obstacles, resilience and determination can pave the way for brighter days ahead.
