Nicole Kidman Reveals Struggles And Triumphs In Her Career

In a candid conversation, Nicole Kidman opened up about the emotional struggles she faced during her illustrious career. The 51-year-old powerhouse recently admitted that she was "deeply depressed" while filming her critically acclaimed movie Destroyer. But that's not all—she also revealed that she almost walked away from a role that would eventually earn her an Oscar.

Nicole Kidman’s Journey Through Adversity

Nicole Kidman traveled to London to share her experiences during a Bafta lecture, where she participated in the Life in Pictures event. This event not only highlighted her career milestones but also provided a platform for her to address important issues like gender imbalance in the film industry. During the lecture, Nicole confessed that she almost backed out of playing Virginia Woolf in the 2002 film The Hours, which ultimately won her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

“I was in a very dark place at the time,” Nicole explained, reflecting on her decision to almost step away from the role. “I was going through personal challenges, and the fear of taking on such an iconic character overwhelmed me. I reached out to the production team, asking if they could consider someone else for the part. But they were firm, telling me, ‘No, you need to get on that plane and get here.’ And you know what? Once I immersed myself in the character, something magical happened. Virginia Woolf just kind of took over, and I became her. It’s hard to explain, but it was like she found a way into my soul.”

This wasn’t the first time Nicole considered stepping away from a role. She admitted that she’s had similar thoughts multiple times throughout her career, but she always found a way to push through. “Acting is this strange, slow process that pulls me back every time,” she said with a smile. “It’s a love-hate relationship, but I truly adore it.”

Her perseverance paid off, as Nicole went on to win the Best Actress award for her performance in The Hours. Clearly, sticking with the role was the right decision. During the Bafta lecture, Nicole also addressed the pressing issue of gender imbalance in Hollywood. “A few years ago, I made a commitment to myself to work with a female director every eighteen months,” she explained. “It’s not just about talking; it’s about taking action. If we want to see change, we have to actively participate in making it happen.”
