Recently, Sarah Drew, the talented actress behind the beloved character, opened up in an interview with Us Weekly about her time on the show and her bittersweet farewell to April.

Sarah Drew Shares Her Feelings About Leaving Grey's Anatomy

In a candid moment, Sarah Drew expressed how much April Kepner has become a part of her life. "She’s part of me and she’ll always be part of me, you know? She’s lived kind of inside [my] skin for nine months of the year for nine years," the 38-year-old shared. "But you know what? I feel like I got to say goodbye to her in a really healthy way. It was a beautiful chapter of my life, and I’m so grateful for every single moment of it. Now, I’m just super excited about what’s coming next!"

Sarah Drew confirmed her departure from the iconic show, which has been running since 2005, earlier this year. "Thank you for all of the love," Sarah wrote on Twitter at the time. "I know you’re sad. I’m sad too. I haven’t really had the time to process this information. I’ve been with it for less than 48 hours, so I’m not ready to say my thank yous and give an all-encompassing statement about my nine years here." She continued, "That will come later. For now, I’d like to say: I love you. And I love April, and her story isn’t over yet. The really good news (for me, at least) is that I’m here on set shadowing one of my favorite people, Kevin McKidd, with my beloved Grey’s family all this week and next, so I get to process all of my feelings surrounded by the community that has nourished and nurtured me for almost a decade. For that, I am so grateful." Luckily, April wasn’t killed off the show like so many other beloved characters we’ve seen go before her.

Can you imagine the heartbreak if they had written her out that way? Fans are definitely breathing a sigh of relief that April’s story didn’t end in tragedy. Instead, her departure was handled with care and respect, leaving the door open for possible future appearances.

Since leaving the series, Sarah admitted she’s been tuning in to watch Grey’s Anatomy. "It’s a little painful to watch your family move on without you, but I wish everybody the best and I know they’re having a wonderful time," she told Us Weekly. Here’s hoping we’ll see her pop up on the show again in the future!
