Cher Spills The Tea On Madonna: A Decades-Long Feud

Let’s talk about an awkward moment in pop culture history! On Monday, September 24, Cher dropped some shade on her fellow music icon, Madonna, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Now, let’s be real—Cher has always been one to speak her mind, but this was a little unexpected. As part of a fun game called “5 Second Rule” with host Ellen DeGeneres, Cher was asked to name three singers she’d love to duet with. Her response? Well, it wasn’t exactly what you’d call diplomatic.

“Adele, Pink, and not Madonna!” Cher exclaimed, leaving the audience with a mix of shock and laughter. You could hear that awkward gasp from all the way back here! Cher, at 72 years old, is still as sharp and unfiltered as ever. This little comment has everyone talking about the long-standing tension between these two legendary women of music.

This isn’t the first time Cher has thrown shade at Madonna. If we rewind to 1991, Cher had some pretty strong words for the Material Girl during an interview with Steve Kmetko. She didn’t hold back when she said, “There’s something about her that I don’t like. She’s mean, and I don’t like that. I remember having her over to my house a couple of times because [Madonna’s then-husband], Sean Penn, and I were friends, and she just was so rude to everybody.”

Cher went on to explain her frustrations further, saying, “It seems to me that she’s got so much that she doesn’t have to act the way that she acts, like a spoiled brat all the time. When you’ve reached the kind of acclaim that she’s reached, and can do whatever you want to do, you should be a little more magnanimous and be a little less of a—you know what I mean.” Oof, that’s a mic drop moment right there. It’s clear that Cher wasn’t a fan of Madonna’s attitude back then, and apparently, not much has changed.

    A Different Perspective

Cher also offered a different take on Madonna in another 1991 interview, acknowledging her creativity while still critiquing her demeanor. She admitted, “It’s not like you go around saying, ‘This is how I feel,’ but somebody said to me, ‘What do you think about her?’ and I said, ‘Well, I think she’s unbelievably creative.’ I mean, I’m amazed at the amount… because, in my day, I was pretty good at doing the same thing that she’s doing, but she does it so much better.”

Cher praised Madonna’s ability to reinvent herself, but couldn’t help but add, “She’s unbelievably creative because she’s not unbelievably talented, she’s not beautiful. She’s kind of… she’s rude.” Wow, Cher really knows how to balance compliments with critique, doesn’t she?

    Did They Bury the Hatchet?

Fast forward to 2013, and it seemed like Cher and Madonna had put their differences aside. During a sit-down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Cher said, “I’m totally good with Madonna! Madge and I have gone through our thing, but no, I’m totally good with her.” Sounds like they patched things up, right? Well, Cher’s recent comment might suggest otherwise. Guess the hatchet wasn’t buried as deep as we thought!
