NYPD Blue Sequel Series: A New Chapter In Cop Drama

Reliving the Glory Days of NYPD Blue

There’s no denying that one of the most iconic TV cop dramas in history—yes, we’re talking about ABC’s NYPD Blue—has left an indelible mark on pop culture. Running for 12 seasons and racking up an impressive 20 Emmy Awards out of 84 nominations, it wasn’t just a show; it was a phenomenon. This groundbreaking series didn’t just launch David Caruso into the world of CSI: Miami; it also turned Dennis Franz into a household name, transforming him from a familiar face on Hill Street Blues to a TV legend. Meanwhile, Jimmy Smits transitioned from a lawyer on L.A. Law to a detective, and even Mark-Paul Gosselaar from Saved by the Bell and Rick Schroder from Silver Spoons found their way into the gritty world of New York policing. Now, it seems the story isn’t over yet, as whispers of an NYPD Blue sequel series are gaining traction.

The Original Blueprint: A Cop Show Like No Other

Created by the late Steven Bochco and David Milch, NYPD Blue was a show that dared to break the mold. The original series centered around the dynamic duo of John Kelly (David Caruso) and Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), a semi-alcoholic and unapologetically racist cop. When Caruso left after the first season to pursue a big-screen career (a move that didn’t exactly pan out), the spotlight shifted to Franz’s Sipowicz. Over the years, Sipowicz was paired with a rotating cast of partners, including Jimmy Smits, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and Rick Schroder. Alongside these partnerships, the show introduced Sharon Lawrence’s Assistant District Attorney, Sylvia Costas, who eventually became Sipowicz’s wife and mother to their son, Theo.

Fast Forward: Theo Sipowicz Takes the Spotlight

Fast forward to the present, and ABC is reportedly developing not a reboot, but a sequel series to NYPD Blue. This new show will pick up where the original left off in 2005, with Theo Sipowicz following in his father’s footsteps as he attempts to carve out his own legacy as a detective in the 15th squad. Theo, described as "hard-drinking, hard-headed, and quick-witted," is set to bring a fresh perspective to the world of New York policing. Fans of the original series will be eager to see how Theo handles the challenges of his new role, especially given his complex family history.

    Returning Faces and Missing Pieces

As a sequel, the new series is expected to bring back some familiar faces from the original cast, adding a layer of nostalgia for long-time fans. However, Theo’s parents won’t be part of the storyline; his mother was tragically killed on the show, and the new premise revolves around Theo investigating the murder of his father. This plot twist may explain why Dennis Franz, the original Andy Sipowicz, isn’t on board with the project. In an interview with Deadline, Franz shared his thoughts: “I did receive a call, and I’m flattered but not interested. NYPD Blue was a high point in my life and career, and I think of it so fondly. I wish them all well and much success.”
