After more than a decade of marriage, Jimmy Fallon still cherishes the memory of the day he proposed to his wife, Nancy Juvonen. But as it turns out, the first attempt at popping the question didn’t exactly go as planned! In a candid interview with PeopleTV's Jess Cagle, Jimmy opened up about the hilarious and unforgettable moments leading up to their engagement.
Jimmy Fallon’s Original Proposal Plan: A Romantic Night Gone Awry
During their heart-to-heart chat, Jimmy shared that he had meticulously planned a romantic proposal for Nancy when she visited him in New York City. Everything was set for a perfect evening, but then Nancy surprised him by securing a reservation at the prestigious French restaurant, Per Se. Jimmy explained his hesitation to propose there: "I wanted it to be romantic and timeless. What if the restaurant moved locations? Years later, I’d have to tell my kids, 'Your mom and I got engaged here... well, technically, it’s now a laser tag place, but it was once very fancy!'"
The Night That Nearly Derailed the Proposal
Unfortunately, Jimmy's grand plan hit a snag that night. As the evening unfolded, they indulged in an elaborate 14-course meal accompanied by endless glasses of wine. By the end of the night, Jimmy was feeling the effects of all that wine. "I was absolutely bombed out of my mind," he admitted with a laugh. "Wine came with every single course. So, I decided to wait another three months before trying again."

The Perfect Moment Finally Arrives
When the time finally came, Jimmy chose a serene summer setting at Nancy’s family home in New Hampshire. Determined to make the moment special, Jimmy prepared himself mentally. "I went out to the dock and gave myself a pep talk," he recalled. "I told myself, 'Don’t cry. Let her cry first.' But let’s be real—I’m a total sap. The moment I got down on one knee, I completely broke down in tears." Nancy, understandably concerned, thought something was seriously wrong. "She looked at me like I was having a stroke," Jimmy joked. "My face must’ve looked like I was smelling burnt toast!"

Once Nancy realized Jimmy wasn’t in medical distress, she gave him the answer he’d been waiting for: "Yes!" The couple celebrated their engagement in style, marking the beginning of a beautiful chapter in their lives. Jimmy and Nancy tied the knot in December 2007 and have since welcomed two adorable daughters, Winnie Rose, 5, and Frances Cole, 3.
