In a world where headlines often focus on the negatives, Matt Lauer’s first wife, Nancy Alspaugh, is standing up to remind everyone of the good in people. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Nancy opened up about her thoughts on her former husband, who was fired from the Today show amid sexual harassment allegations back in November. Now, at 63, she’s advocating for him, stating, “Matt needs to be given a second chance.”
Why Nancy Believes in Matt's Redemption
Nancy highlighted the side of Matt that often gets overshadowed by the controversies. “Matt has always been a rock for his family and loved ones,” she revealed. “He’s quietly done so much to help others and to support important causes. For instance, he donated a significant amount to my autism charity, ACT Today. People might not know this, but through all his hard work, he’s made a positive impact on the world. Matt never sought recognition for it; he just wanted to give back. And now, more than ever, he wants to continue making a difference in society.”
She emphasized Matt's role as a father. “He’s a loving dad to his three kids—Jack, 17, Romy, 14, and Thijs, 11. His children mean the world to him, and he’s always been there for them, no matter what. It’s this side of Matt that people need to see more of. He’s more than just the headlines. He’s a human being with flaws, but also immense strengths.”

Looking Forward: Matt's Future in Media
Despite the challenges Matt has faced, Nancy is confident he’ll make a comeback. “I truly believe Matt will be back working in no time. He might have stepped back for now, but he’s determined to be part of the change in this world. Whether it’s behind the camera or in front of it, Matt has a unique talent. He’s a storyteller, a documentarian. His passion for recording life and sharing it with the world hasn’t diminished. He’s equally comfortable in front of and behind the cameras, and I’m sure this will work out for him eventually.”
Her belief in Matt’s resilience is unwavering. “He’s not someone who gives up easily. He’s faced adversity before, and he’s come out stronger. This time won’t be any different. Matt has a lot to offer, and the world needs to hear his voice again.”
Comparing Matt's Divorces: Then and Now
Nancy also reflected on the differences between Matt’s highly publicized divorce from Annette Roque and their own separation in 1988. “Their divorce has been a completely different experience from ours,” she explained. “When Matt and I decided to part ways, it was relatively straightforward. We both felt it was time to move on because of our careers. Looking back, I think we could have made it work. We had too much pride back then. If we had prioritized our marriage over our careers, we might have saved it and had a future together.”
Despite their separation, Nancy shared that there are no hard feelings between them. “Our relationship had its time, and we both know we love each other in a special way. Even though we didn’t last as a couple, Matt’s mother and sister are family to me. Our children are around the same age, and a couple of years ago, around the time I lost my husband, we all got together. It was a beautiful moment, and our kids got to know each other. There’s never been any animosity between us.”

Nancy expressed her hope that Matt will eventually get the opportunity to tell his side of the story. “I don’t think he’s been given a fair chance to defend himself. I hope, sooner rather than later, he’ll be able to share his perspective. He’s starting to feel more like himself again, and people will finally hear his version of events.”
