When Matthew McConaughey made an appearance on The Tonight Show back on Wednesday, September 12, host Jimmy Fallon invited the actor to play a fun game of "True Confessions." During the lighthearted segment, Matthew shared an incredible story about how he once saved his now 10-year-old son, Levi, from a charging mountain ram! Yeah, you heard that right. It’s wild stuff.
Matthew recounted the dramatic moment, saying, "I got charged by a mountain ram at the edge of the Grand Canyon and had to throw my six-month-old child 15 feet through the air — to my wife — just to save him." This harrowing encounter happened nearly a decade ago when Matthew, now 48, was enjoying a peaceful picnic with his wife, Camila Alves, and their infant son Levi in the mountains. Life can take some unexpected turns, huh?

Caught Off Guard: The Moment the Ram Charged
Once the couple spotted the angry animal, Matthew said that his wife, Camila, who was then 36, quickly started heading down the hill so he could toss their baby Levi into her waiting arms. But even after Camilla and Levi were safe, Matthew wasn’t out of danger yet. The ram wasn’t done charging, and Matthew had to think fast.
“I grabbed this little branch and I got behind it. It was a cherry bush, and it was about as big as my pinky. I was like, 'This is not gonna save me at all,'” Matthew humorously explained to Jimmy, holding up his pinky finger for emphasis. “I squared off and just tried to channel my inner Yoda with this ram. I was like, 'Not me, whatever it is,' and he was kicking dirt and everything.”
How It All Played Out
Luckily, no one was injured during this intense encounter. Matthew later explained that his dog was growling at the furious animal when they first saw the ram, but it turned out that the real issue was the spot where the McConaughey family had chosen for their picnic. “We were between him and all his ladies, and he didn’t want any other male scent on his mountain,” Matthew joked. “I was like, 'Your mountain, sir!'”
Matthew and Camilla might want to consider a different picnic spot next time. Safety first, right?
