For decades, Kirk Douglas has been celebrated as a Hollywood legend, but to his son Michael Douglas, he's simply "dad." In a heartfelt interview with Closer Weekly, Michael revealed how much his father has meant to him. "He taught me to never give up," Michael said with admiration. "Just last night, I had dinner with him. He'll be turning 102 in December, and he's doing remarkably well."
Despite their close bond, Michael, now 73, admitted that growing up in the shadow of his father's immense success wasn't always easy. "My dad was a movie star — having that name came with its pros and cons. People think it’s a silver spoon kind of deal. But trust me, it's not," he explained. Living up to such a legacy can be tough, and Michael knows that firsthand.

Following in Dad's Footsteps Wasn't Always Easy
Interestingly, Michael didn't initially want to pursue acting because he felt he couldn't measure up to his father's legendary status. "I thought I could never be the actor Dad was, so I avoided it for a while," he confessed. "Not a lot of actors’ kids make it big. Hollywood is filled with failures, and I didn’t want to add to that list." Early on, Michael struggled with the craft, often overthinking it. "For a long time, I didn’t really enjoy acting. I was always censoring, editing, or analyzing it instead of just letting myself go with the flow," he added.
Learning From Life's Challenges
Michael's personal life also had its share of ups and downs. His first marriage to film producer Diandra Luker ended in divorce. Reflecting on the experience, he shared, "Like a lovely orchid, marriage thrives when nurtured, but if ignored, it withers away." Over time, Michael learned to prioritize his family. "My marriage and my family come before my career now," he said, highlighting the joy of waking up his children in the morning. "There’s nothing like the unconditional love you get from your kids," he gushed, speaking fondly of his youngest children, Dylan, 18, and Carys, 15, with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Rebuilding and Rediscovering Love
Michael and Catherine faced a brief separation in 2013, but they worked through it. "We talked things out," Michael explained. "Catherine is amazing, and I can't single out one thing about being married to her because it's all wonderful." Now, he cherishes every moment with his family, including his eldest son, Cameron, 39, from his first marriage. In December 2017, Michael became a grandfather to Cameron's daughter, Lua Izzy Douglas. "I adore Lua — she’s absolutely stunning," he said with pride. "Being a grandparent is even more special when the house is empty, but I still have my daughter with me!"
