Meghan McCain Honors Her Father’s Legacy

Meghan McCain poured out her soul in a touching tribute to her father. “My father, United States Senator John Sidney McCain III, left this world today. I was with him as he took his final breath, just as he was there for me when I drew my first. Over the course of 33 years, he nurtured me, guided me, corrected me, consoled me, encouraged me, and supported me in every possible way. His love for me was boundless, and I loved him deeply. He taught me the art of living,” she wrote.

“Everything I am today is because of him. Now, in his absence, my mission is to uphold the standards, expectations, and love he embodied. His passing fills me with sorrow and grief, shared by my mother, my brothers, and my sisters. He was a blazing beacon who illuminated our lives with brilliance and warmth for so long,” Meghan continued. “Yet, we believe his spirit endures within each of us. The days ahead may feel different without my dad, but they will be filled with purpose and love, inspired by the life he led for us.”

“Your prayers, for his soul and for our family, mean the world to us. My father may be gone, but I miss him as only an adoring daughter can. Yet, in this loss, I find solace in knowing: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, has now entered a realm more radiant than anything on earth. Today, the warrior embarks on his true and eternal journey, greeted by those who came before him, rising to meet the Creator of All Things: 'The dream is ended: this is the morning,’” she concluded.

    The Final Chapter

Just a day before John’s passing, the McCain family announced that he had chosen to discontinue medical treatment for his glioblastoma. “Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with the American public what his family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, and the prognosis was dire. Despite the odds, John defied expectations for survival over the past year,” the family statement explained on August 24.

“However, the relentless progression of the disease and the inevitable march of time dictated their verdict. With his characteristic strength of will, John decided to cease medical treatment,” the statement continued. “Our family extends our deepest gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who have supported him throughout the past year and to the countless friends, colleagues, and well-wishers who have kept him in their thoughts and prayers. May God bless and thank you all.”

John McCain’s journey with brain cancer began in July 2017. In a candid interview with CBS' 20/20 that fall, he opened up about his diagnosis. “They told me the prognosis was extremely serious. Some put the survival rate at three percent, others at fourteen percent. It’s a grim outlook. So, I simply said, ‘I understand. Now, we’ll do everything we can, find the best doctors, and fight as hard as we can.’ And at the same time, I remain grateful for a life well-lived,” he shared.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the McCain family during this challenging time.
