Decades Later, Fans Still Dream of Marty McFly’s Return
Even though it's been nearly three decades since the last movie in the Back to the Future franchise hit theaters, fans haven’t stopped dreaming of Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s next adventure. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and their trusty time-traveling DeLorean have left an indelible mark on pop culture. Now, with the film industry churning out sequels, prequels, and reboots left and right, it’s no surprise that fans are clamoring for Back to the Future 4 to take them back to the world of time-traveling antics. The question is: would it live up to the magic of the original trilogy?
It’s the golden age of nostalgia in Hollywood, and movie studios are cashing in on it big time. That’s why The Hollywood Reporter teamed up with Morning Consult, a company that specializes in online surveys, to gauge which franchises fans want to see revived the most. With all the reboots and sequels hitting theaters these days, it’s no wonder people are hungry for a trip back to Hill Valley and beyond.
What the Poll Revealed About Fan Favorites
Between November 8 and 11, 2,200 adults were asked which franchises they’d most like to see return. And guess what? Back to the Future came out on top as the series fans want to revisit more than any other. But it wasn’t just Marty and Doc stealing the show. Indiana Jones followed closely behind with 68% of the vote, and Jurassic Park wasn’t far behind at 67%. Further down the list, The Hunger Games scored 55%, The Matrix got 54%, and Avatar landed at 53%.

Why Nostalgia Fuels the Desire for Reboots
Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president, reflected on the poll results, saying, “There’s a strong consumer demand for movie reboots and sequels, which is great news for movie studios trying to tap into that nostalgic vibe. Our polling shows that half of Americans say they’re much more likely to watch throwbacks and revivals.”
But here’s the thing: do people really want to see all these franchises return? Sure, the Back to the Future trilogy is iconic, but can you imagine Michael J. Fox, who’s been battling Parkinson’s disease for years, reprising his role as Marty McFly? Or Christopher Lloyd pulling off Doc Brown’s antics again? It’s hard to imagine them embarking on a new time-traveling adventure. Would fans prefer a reboot with fresh faces or a sequel that introduces new characters discovering the legendary DeLorean?
Let’s be real, though—probably not.

Looking at the Bigger Picture: Other Franchises in the Mix
It’s great to see Indiana Jones scoring so high, especially since director Steven Spielberg and actor Harrison Ford are already prepping for a fifth adventure, set to release in 2021. At 79, Harrison will be bringing a new kind of action to the screen. Fans will be curious to see how they handle the action sequences with age on their side.

As for Jurassic Park, its success is no shocker, given how the franchise has been reborn through the Jurassic World series, with a third chapter already in the works. On the other hand, The Hunger Games doesn’t seem likely to return, as all the books have been adapted and Jennifer Lawrence is ready to move on. Meanwhile, The Matrix’s high ranking is a bit surprising, considering that while the first film was a hit, the sequels didn’t resonate as well with critics or fans, despite their box office success.
